Storytelling Starters ~ A day full of promise

Life is rarely even-paced. At least not in my experience. Even at this stage when it’s hugely less packed than it used to be with storytelling engagements, performances and commitments generally, it often seems more full than I’d like or expected.

But  today the sun is shining with fluffy clouds and it’s the day my brilliant young cousin, Luke Walker, is having an Open Day at his workshop. Luke designs clothes, men’s clothes. Even as a student of fashion, he showed an innovative approach and a confidence in his own ideas that pointed him out as someone who would surely do quite brilliantly.

What a clever thing it was, for instance, that while still a student and doing work-experience at a well-known London fashion house, he casually left one of his own ‘inside-out’ jackets hanging on a peg. When the head of the house walked through, it naturally drew his attention. He stopped and fingered it. Whose is this?

Luke lived with us during a period some years ago now when he came to London as a fashion student. As well as being an absolute pleasure because of the sort of person he is, it was always fascinating to hear what he was up to. The pleasure continues now that he lives in London and has his own label, LEJ. So how could we miss it his Open Day?

And of course, today is an inviting day in other ways too. The sun is shining. How lovely is that! A walk is called for, perhaps at one of our usual walk-venues, Brockwell Park or Clapham Common. Or, given that we’ll be going over to the East End to Luke’s Open Day, it maybe somewhere quite else. When I was a young person doing VSO and living in Kenya for nine months, I must have got very used to sunshine. Now that I can no longer take it for granted that the sun will be shining on most days. there’s one thing I do know for sure. When it’s up there, smiling down on us beneficently, it’s a good idea to take advantage of it.

So off I go. To see Luke’s creations (and to finger it too!) and to enjoy the sunshine on the way. A good Saturday is what this is!

PS: My top picture is self explanatory! The bottom picture is of course a Wales rugby shirt. The Six Nations Tournament will be starting next week and, of course, the Wales games will require my full attention. Cymru am beth! Wales forever!
